Hercules & Love Affair - The feast of the broken heart

Hercules & Love Affair ist das New Yorker Musikprojekt um Andy Butler. Als DJ und Mastermind entwirft er die Musik, die Tanzflächen füllen soll. 2008 erschien das Debüt und mit der Single “Blind” verschaffte sich Hercules & Love Affair vor allem wegen des prominenten Gastsängers Antony Hegarty (Antony & The Johnsons) Aufmerksamkeit. Während auf dem aktuellen und dritten Album der Band Gustaph und Rouge Mary als feste Sänger agieren, kann Andy Butler mit Krystle Warren und John Grant auch wieder bekannte Gäste präsentieren. Butler und Grant stammen beide aus Colorado und spätestens mit seinen dance-orientierten Songs auf “Pale green ghosts” hat sich Grant für seine Beiträge zu einem “Hercules & Love Affair”-Album qualifiziert.

Andy Butler über “The feast of the broken heart”:

“I wanted nasty basslines, stormy, bleary-eyed sounds, fiery, rough, tough and ragged old school house productions that sounded almost techno. I didn’t want polite, I wanted aggressive.”

“Aggressiv” würde ich die Songs nicht nennen, aber sie sind zumindest im Uptempo Bereich und weitgehend “treibend”. Daher und wegen des wechselnden Sängern und Sängerinnen ist “The feast of the broken heart” für ein Dance Album erfreulich abwechslungsreich. Das Debüt konnte die PvG Jury nicht überzeugen und das Zweitwerk "Blue songs" kam erst gar nicht zur Verhandlung. Vielleicht lassen sich einige Richter mit diesem Zitat aus "The Line Of Best Fit" neugierig machen:

The way that Butler dips into other genres, albeit briefly, or plays with tone and pace, gives the feeling of a DJ set or a mixtape in itself. It becomes a fully-formed night-out soundtrack, right through from getting suited and booted, to stumbling home at 3am with the remnants of a kebab round your chops.

“Hercules thems 2014”, “My offence” und die beiden Songs mit John Grant “I try to talk to you” und “Liberty” sind die Höhepunkte auf “The feast of the broken heart”.
